What I Have Learned So Far

I have learned so much about the media, myself and writing in general during this semester. I have realized that I need to pay close attention to the types of media outlets that I keep up with because variety helps form well-rounded opinions. If I only read or watch content from one source, I am likely not to receive the full story because of media bias. Therefore, I have decided to receive my news from many different sources so that I have the best chance of being as educated on issues as possible.

Before I took this course, I had never been exposed to the AP style of writing that the media follows. I have a much better understanding of it now, which will be useful throughout my college career and afterwards when I pursue a career in public relations. Now, I am more aware of little details in my writing that I had previously looked over. I can also recognize AP style concepts in the news, which shows how applicable it is to the real world.

One of my favorite parts of the course is when we studied advertising and the different tactics that companies use to sell products. I have a new found interest for advertising and the different styles of it. I enjoy seeing an ad and being able to identify what appeal the company used within it.

Blogging has helped me this semester with my writing and also my own self-discovery. I have been able to show my creativity through topics that I have chosen and the way that I have chosen to design my blog. I now realize that blogging is so much more than writing. It is a way to connect your interests with the interests of your audience and a way to express creativity in many forms. I love how my blog has become a portfolio of my work that I am able to use for professional and personal purposes. I intend on using my blog on a regular basis and going back through it in a few years and to see how my writing has improved and progressed.

My favorite type of writing is print writing because length is not as much of a concern as it is in other forms. I include many details in my writing, which can make it lengthy. Writing for broadcast and advertising can be difficult for me. When I did my broadcast and advertising assignments, I spent a while editing because my writing was too long. The length and time restrictions were a challenge for me. I notice this when I write my blog posts as well because I always spend a significant amount of time editing.

Fake news is an interesting concept to me because in some cases, media outlets clearly mislead the audience into forming specific opinions about stories by leaving out details. However, in other situations, I believe that calling the news fake is a response to people not being portrayed in a positive light in the media. It can be a way of denial for public figures. A good example of this would be President Donald Trump’s statements.

I believe that news sources should not have bias because their job is to report stories so that the audience can form their own opinions about the information. Social media and blogs are the perfect places for people to comment on the news and interject their opinions.

I am excited to continue this journey so that I can learn more about communication and improve my own writing skills in the future.

The Ultimate Communication Tool: Social Media

social media

Social Media platforms are definitely the most successful ways to communicate these days. With a click of a button, hundreds or even thousands of people are able to view posts containing various types of content such as text, video, and photography.

Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are popular social media websites because it is quick and easy to share content. Instagram is the perfect place to share photos and build a profile of archive photography that can be viewed at any time. With many filters and editing options available, posting photos on Instagram has become one of the most popular forms of expressing creativity.

Some have said that Twitter is not as popular as it once was. However, I personally still use Twitter on a daily basis for the humor. The popularity of memes has given it a quality of comedy that has not been easily matched by other social media.

I believe that Facebook helps maintain the integrity of journalism the most because there is not a character restriction on posts. Therefore, news sources are able to post full stories without being limited. Also, news outlets are able to directly link their stories to Facebook posts for people to view.

Broadcast vs. Print News

Writing for broadcast news and writing for print news are different in many ways. Broadcast news is typically shorter than print news because time is a major factor in broadcast media. The reporters and anchors have specific amounts of time for each story so that the whole program will run smoothly. Therefore, the length of the writing is an extremely important factor of their jobs.

Another difference between broadcast and print is abbreviations. When writing for print, abbreviations such as ‘Dr’ for Drive are acceptable because they follow the AP style. However, if a writer uses that abbreviation in a broadcast piece, the anchor or reporter may have trouble deciding if that means ‘Doctor’ or ‘Drive’ depending on the context. For that reason, abbreviations are not typically used in broadcast writing.

Broadcast writing and print writing are similar in that they must not have any grammatical errors, and both forms of news must contain enough information for the audience/reader to understand the story. I personally prefer print writing because I like to include a lot of details in my writing.  I also prefer to receive my news from print sources as opposed to broadcast because I like to be able to read a story for myself rather than being told a story.

Some of the most popular broadcast news sources are MSNBC, ABC, CNN and Fox News. Some popular print newspapers are The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and USA Today.

Met Gala Madness

On May 1, the Met Gala took place in New York City. Some call it “Fashion’s Biggest Night” because celebrities who can afford the $30,000 tickets wear outfits created by world renowned fashion designers. The purpose of the event is to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Every year, the event highlights a specific designer by dedicating the night to him/her. This year the event honored Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo, who is known for her avant-garde designs. Therefore, the guests were expected to arrive in extravagant creations by couture designers.

A few celebrities such as Rihanna and took the theme to heart by wearing extreme and unique attire. Rihanna sported a striking floral print ensemble from Comme des Garçons’ 2017 couture line. Since Rei Kawakubo is a designer for Comme des Garçons, Rihanna dressed perfectly for the theme.

Along with Rihanna, Katy Perry also stunned in her avant-garde look, which grabbed the attention of many photographers and spectators alike. Her John Galliano-designed outfit was styled by Jamie Mizrahi, and the red veil and heeled boots helped give it the wow factor that caught so much attention. Some have even wondered if ‘Witness’ is the title of Perry’s new album since she wore it on her veil.
