On Feb. 26, 2017, the 89th Academy Awards ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel took place in Los Angeles, California. This particular event was filled with many surprises, and Jimmy Kimmel definitely knew how to keep the audience entertained by poking fun at celebrities such as Matt Damon with whom he has had a long running feud.
La La Land set a new record for the most nominations with 14 in all, and Emma Stone won the award for Best Actress for her role in the film. Casey Affleck took home the award for Best Actor for his role in Manchester by the Sea. However, this win produced backlash from many people due to sexual assault allegations surrounding Affleck. The controversy did not end there because La La Land was mistakenly named Best Picture.
While the creators of La La Land were thanking the Academy for the award, the news of the mix up was revealed, and the creators of Moonlight were presented with the Oscar. Adele Romanski, the producer of Moonlight, said that she hoped the film would inspire viewers at home who felt marginalized. Despite the controversy, both parties handled the situation as best they could.
